Veilfall comes to Taria
Veilfall is here. Guide lost souls home, face the Hollow King, grow a colossal pumpkin and collect eight rares, in a Taria that now lives and breathes.
Veilfall
For about a month, Taria's departed come home to visit. Wick the Lamplighter, at the foot of the Pumpkin Walk in the town square, needs your help guiding them back through the Veil Gate by the pond north of town. While the event runs, the welcome screen shows what's happening this week, and Wick offers you a free teleport to him the first time you close it. After that, the Veilfall banner on the welcome screen can take you to Wick once every 30 minutes.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| October 21 | Veilfall begins: Wisps, Witching Hours, the Ghost Market, trick-or-treating, Colossal Pumpkins and the first Lost Souls. The Hollow King rides every Witching Hour, or whenever players call him at the Veil Gate. |
| October 24 | More souls come home, fallen players linger as ghosts, the Skeleton Dungeon becomes the Hallowed Crypt, and the Hollow King brings out his hoard. |
| October 30 to November 2 | Veilfall Night, the whole Halloween weekend. The veil stays thin and the Hollow King rides every hour. Pumpkin care ends, and the weigh-in, carving and the Pumpkin Walk open. |
| Until mid-November | Veilfall carries on after Night: Wisps, rares, souls and the Hollow King, with the weigh-in, carving and the Pumpkin Walk still open. |
Lost Souls
Twelve souls linger near the people they left behind, from Fred's grandmother to Andy's canary. Each asks for one small favour before you walk it home, and it leaves its spot to follow you to the Veil Gate. Guide them all to earn the Wisp companion.
Wisps and the Ghost Market
Wisps are Veilfall's currency, earned for the time you spend playing. An hour of any skill, or of fighting monsters near your level, earns the same 150 Wisps, so do whatever you enjoy, whenever you play. Trick-or-treating, guiding souls home and the Hollow King add more, and the Hallowed Crypt earns Wisps half again as fast.
Spend them with Wick or at Madame Mirelle's Ghost Market by the Veil Gate. It stays open all event and sells every rare unlocked so far, a Ghostly Shroud that turns you into a see-through ghost in your own clothes, and a handful of cheap toys:
- Boo Whistle: a little ghost pops up out of the ground beside you to shout BOO!
- Bone Fortune: knucklebones tumble to your feet and glow before you read your fortune out loud.
- Pumpkin Pail: rattle it until sweets hop out and bounce around you while you call out "Trick or treat!"
- Candy Corn Pouch: tosses a candy corn to every friend nearby for them to catch, or flips one into your own mouth when you're alone.
Witching Hours
Every three hours, night falls over Taria. Deep darkness gathers away from you, while you, other players, flickering lanterns, campfires, glowing pumpkins and spell effects each cast a soft, warm pool of light. If it's too dark for you, the announcement points you to the new Night Darkness setting.
The Hollow King
From the first day to the last, the Hollow King rides into the clearing below the Veil Gate every Witching Hour. You can also call him whenever you like by offering Wisps at the Veil Gate: 150 for each player he rewards, so his rares cost the same however many of you share the fight. Anyone can chip in, leftover Wisps count toward his next ride, and a King you call drops rares but no Wisps. He grows tougher as more players join in, so even one or two of you can take him on, and he leaves players who are still doing First Steps alone.
He comes in smashing with a burning mace and grinning before he gallops down a glowing lane, trampling everyone in his path and leaving his hoofprints burning behind him. He blows out the Witchfire Lanterns ringing the clearing, and every dark lantern makes him harder to hurt until someone lights it again. At half health his head bounces away among cackling decoys. His headless body is blind: it charges whoever the real head is looking at, and anyone still moving when it stops to listen. Catch the head with any hit to make him vulnerable again.
Your Hollow King kills, your fastest fight and his rares are tracked in the Collection Log, with milestones at 1, 10, 25 and 50 kills.
Trick-or-treat
Visit eleven townsfolk once a day for a treat, or a harmless trick that turns you into something silly for a minute in a puff of violet smoke and bats (even if it has to knock you off your mount first). A line in chat tells you which you got and what it gave you.
Colossal Pumpkins
Take a seed from the basket at Farmer Joe's patch and plant it there (a seed left in your bank works too). Tend it every day until Veilfall Night, then weigh it and carve its face. A week of care grows a Gold-ribbon pumpkin. Light your Carved Jack-o'-Lantern to hold it up with your own carving flickering inside and its candle lighting up the dark. The heaviest forty pumpkins light the Pumpkin Walk with their growers' names.
Ghost form
From October 24, fallen players linger as ghosts for thirty seconds, saying Boo to anyone nearby and gathering wisps only ghosts can see. After your second time as a ghost, you can choose to come back right away.
Rares
Eight tradeable rares stop dropping forever when Veilfall ends. Some drop now and then while you play, Madame Mirelle sells four of them for Wisps, and the rest come only from the Hollow King. Got a duplicate? Madame Mirelle buys back the rares she sells for a quarter of their price in Wisps, so you can put it toward the one you want.

Halloween in the store
Eight Halloween outfits (Skeleton, Vampire Count, Frankenstein, Mummy, Zombie, Witch, Pumpkin King and Plague Doctor), nine pets (Mini Ghost, Mini Vampire, Mini Zombie, Spectral Fox, Spectral Cat, Spectral Dragon, Black Cat, Pumpkin Sprite and Bat) and three mounts (the Nightmare, Spectral Kirin and Spectral Phoenix) are available from day one and stay in the store after the event. While Veilfall runs, the Halloween outfits are featured at the top of the Outfits menu, and the Halloween pets come first in the pet shop.
A world that feels alive
Taria now lives and breathes around you.
- Critters and weather. Butterflies and bees flutter over the meadows and settle on flowers, sparrows peck about in groups and scatter when you walk up, seagulls work the beaches, frogs leap into the water from the shore, dragonflies dart over ponds and crabs scuttle on the sand. A bird's shadow sometimes sweeps across the ground. During the Witching Hour, moths, fireflies and bats come out, and house windows glow warm in the dark.
- Light and movement. The water glints in the sun and fish rise in rings, foam laps the shores, dandelion seeds drift on the breeze and dust hangs in the dungeons. Chimneys smoke, trees let go of a leaf now and then, and bushes, reeds and grass rustle as you brush through them. Your feet kick up dust on dirt and sand, splash in the shallows, flick the grass and leave prints in the snow.
- Townsfolk. They turn to look at you as you pass, and now and then a little bubble pops up over their heads: Fred dozes off, Gemmy gets a heart, Farmer Joe hums a tune.
- Your sky, your way. Settings > Graphics > Ambience opens a window where you can turn the critters and particles off and pick your own Time of Day (dawn to night) and Weather (clear, cloudy, rain, storm or snow). Only you see your sky and weather, and events such as the Witching Hour still darken the world.
- Gathering hits for real. Chopping knocks wood chips off the trunk and shakes a leaf or two loose while the tree sways and settles. When it runs out, it topples away from you, lands in a shower of leaves and dust, and fades into its stump. Mining strikes sparks and knocks loose stone and ore chips in each rock's own colours, and an emptied rock crumbles into rubble. Forage plants sway and shed petals as you work them, then hop away in a puff when picked. Fishing casts splash where your line lands, a spot that runs out ends with the fish diving away, and harvested crops are pulled out of the ground in a burst of leaves and soil.
- A rod in your hands. You now hold a fishing rod while fishing and visibly cast your line, with the rod tinted to match each tool tier. Fishing, mining, woodcutting and foraging swings now last exactly as long as each attempt, so you're never left standing still.
- See where you're going. Trees, houses and other scenery fade when you walk behind them, so you can always see your character. Trees, rocks, stations and furniture now sort correctly with players and monsters, and the half pine stumps in the forests are whole stumps.
A lot more to hear
Every attack now makes one sound: a sword hit thwacks or a blocked swing whooshes, bows twang, and spells crackle as they go off and strike when they land. Monsters that cast or shoot are heard too. Fights you aren't part of sit quietly behind your own, and hits landing together no longer pile up into one loud bang.
Footsteps vary as you walk, with fresh steps on dirt and stone and splashes through the shallows. Campfires, bonfires, braziers and torches crackle as you pass, the anvil rings and the furnace roars while you smith and smelt, and fires sizzle while you cook. The axe, pickaxe and scythe sound the moment your tool connects, and chopping and mining no longer repeat the same hit. The bank chest creaks open, dungeon and farm gates swing open, and sounds from other players and monsters fade with distance instead of cutting off. Birdsong, surf and cave drips play around you depending on where you are.
Settings > Audio has a new Ambient Sound slider for the birdsong, surf, rain and critters, and Music and Sound volume are now sliders too.
Wardrobe and store
- Four new outfits unlike any before: Shadow Ninja, Wandering Monk, Harvest Farmer and Fortune Teller.
- Weapon appearances change how your melee weapon or bow looks while you hold it: the Ronin Katana (plus Gilded, Obsidian and Sakura), the Flanged Mace (plus Gilded, Obsidian and Frostbound), Crimson, Emerald, Amethyst, Solar and Rose Glowblades, the Gilded Longbow and the Hunter's Slingshot.
- A third collection of 56 cosmetics and 13 complete outfits: 16 heraldic heater shields, 12 knightly helmets with separate visors and crests to mix and match, kimonos, tabards and a mail hauberk, dragonfly wings, a wolf tail, dragon ears and gilded horns, plus new earrings, belts, cuffs, a forager's basket and facial hair.
- Daily deals. Each day, three complete outfits sit at the top of the Outfits tab marked Daily deal, at 25% off the pieces you don't own yet instead of the usual 10%. The deals change at midnight UTC and work through every outfit in turn, so each look comes back on sale every couple of weeks.
- Golden Seraph Wings for every supporter. Everyone who has supported Taria with a purchase, Gem pack or membership now gets these gilded wings. If you've bought something before, they unlock the next time you log in. They can't be bought, and they appear in your Wardrobe once you own them.
- A bonus on your first purchase. The first Gem pack a character buys also gives as many Taria Tokens as Gems, on top of any member bonus. The store's Gem section shows the offer, with each pack's doubled bonus, until you make that first purchase.
- Founder Packs have new animated icons. The Black Lion roars out of a gold crest with a burning mane on the minimap button and the welcome screen, and each pack has its own: Founder flies Taria's sword-in-the-stone banner, Hero wields Taria's rune blade, and Legend wears the crown.
- Paddle checkout. Gem and membership purchases on desktop and web can now check out through Paddle, which handles taxes, receipts and refunds for you. Memberships bought this way can be managed from the store like any other, and existing Stripe memberships keep working. The 50 and 100 Gem packs are now sold only in the mobile apps.
- Tapping your Gems or Taria Tokens at the top of the Founder Packs window opens the store to buy Gems, like it already does in the wardrobe, pet and mount shops.
- Base Clothing now offers thick, thin or no eyebrows, in the colour of your choice.
- New characters start with brown hair instead of bald: a short cut, or a shoulder-length bob after switching to the female body. Bald is still in the Hair choices, and characters who already picked it stay bald.
- Bone Body armor is now bone-white, Bush Body is forest green, the Iron Helm has a charcoal lining, the Bone Helm's fur is lighter and the Crimson Court Cape has white trim, with matching inventory icons.
- The pet ability icons, the Skeleton Key and its two halves, all eighteen foraging plants, and the seaweed, ent sap, octopus venom, gnoll sinew, imp ash and lizard fang used in brewing are redrawn by hand, sharp and clean instead of blurry.
Gameplay and interface
- Hold to inspect. Tap and hold an item on your hotbar to see its name, description, how much health it heals, its bonuses and the levels you need. Keep holding and slide along the hotbar to see each item in turn. Letting go closes it, and holding never uses the item.
- A new welcome screen. A large banner across the top shows the current event or promotion, and the top card opens the store straight to Gems and Membership. Your login details sit in a compact line at the bottom: server time, last session and last IP (tap it to hide the IP).
- An easier Quests window. Quests in progress come first, then ones you haven't started, then completed ones, each colour-coded as in progress, ready to start, locked or completed. Every requirement is listed, and a quest can only be tracked once you meet them all.
- The quest tracker can be collapsed to a single line with its - button and expanded with +, remembered per character. It also hides during story scenes so it no longer covers them.
- Talking to Fred, Farmer Joe or Jack shows their quest conversations and their usual options together in one menu.
- On desktop and web, press 1-8 to pick a dialog option and Space to continue. Holding Space no longer skips through conversations.
- Menu hotkeys now toggle: press the key again to close the menu it opened. Pressing M with the world map open closes it, and the same works for every menu you can bind a key to.
- Chopping, mining, fishing, foraging and farming now take you off your mount, the way combat already does.
- Food in your backpack can now be eaten: tap it to inspect it, then press Eat.
- You no longer get kicked for being AFK while you're busy in a menu. Banking, shopping, crafting, eating, picking dialogue options and managing friends or your guild all count now, and every click and tap keeps you online.
- A new Hide Other Pets setting under Settings > Gameplay hides every pet that belongs to someone else, so busy spots like the bank stay tidy.
- Pets and quest companions keep up with you, matching your speed even when you're mounted, and reappear beside you if they fall more than 10 tiles behind. Several summoned pets keep their own spots instead of stacking up.
- Pet drops now count as ultra rare drops: they add to your Rare Drops stat and are announced to everyone in game and in the Discord activity channel.
- Emoji packs you own now come right after the free Starter pack in the emoji picker.
- The world map shows other players only through the members-only friend and guild markers, with a coloured square under each head portrait.
- The Collection Log shows every monster's level next to its name.
- Settings > Graphics has a new Night Darkness option (Full, Subtle or Off); phones start on Subtle so night stays readable outdoors. A Screen Effects toggle beside it turns off screen wobble and distortion for anyone sensitive to motion.
- An optional performance overlay in Settings > Graphics shows your FPS, 1% lows, frame times and ping.
- Newly chosen usernames can be found straight away, so a friend request or invite to a brand-new player no longer fails with "Player not found".
Languages
- Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai can now be chosen from the language menu. The menu lists every language by its own name, such as 日本語 and ไทย, and a new globe button on the main menu opens it directly and shows your current language's flag. Spanish now shows Spain's flag.
- Every language is fully translated again. About 1,800 lines that showed in English, including Veilfall, A Place for Puddle, the new pets, mounts and cosmetics and recent menus, are now translated into all 16 languages. Login and connection messages, the loading and reconnect screens, NPC speech, chat and guild notices, player shop messages and number formatting follow your language too.
- Text in Russian and other languages that don't use the pixel font is now the same size as English, and text too long for its label or button shrinks to fit instead of spilling out. These languages also use about 30 MB less memory on every device.
- Polish had the Archery and Fletching skill names swapped, which is fixed.
Smoother everywhere
- Smoother movement. Walking, the camera and animations now move evenly at your screen's full refresh rate, instead of looking slightly jerky at a steady 60 or 120 FPS.
- Full speed at 4K. The OpenGL graphics option used to drop to about 16 FPS at 4K on some graphics drivers, including NVIDIA's. It now runs at full frame rate, and every graphics option does less work.
- A lighter HUD. The on-screen HUD takes far less work every frame, which helps frame rates on phones and older computers, and the bank, XP lamp and player shop windows do much less work while open.
- Busy worlds stay smooth. Crowded towns, busy chat, world announcements and everyone logging back in after a restart no longer cause lag spikes, and a world with thousands of players online needs about half the server time it did.
- Steadier walking. The server now follows your walking step by step with the same movement your game uses. A stutter no longer jumps your character across the screen, you're no longer snapped back for walking past a tree or rock you just cleared, and other players and monsters no longer seem to stop a few steps short.
- In crowded spots, players standing still appear as soon as there is room on screen, and arrows and spells fired from afar show for everyone near their target right away.
- The game now runs on older phones, tablets and browsers with weaker graphics chips that it used to turn away at startup.
- The desktop and mobile apps no longer sit on Checking for updates on networks with broken IPv6, such as some VPNs and home routers.
- Typing in web chat no longer lowers the frame rate or causes reconnects, and returning to the web game after switching tabs keeps you connected.
- Losing focus no longer lowers the frame rate on any platform.
Accounts and rules
- Punishments now work on infraction points. Each rule carries points, and your total decides the punishment: a warning first, then longer mutes and bans. Most points expire after a while, while cheating, real world trading, selling accounts and payment fraud are permanent bans.
- My Account at legendsoftaria.com/account shows whether you're muted or banned, your infraction history with the rule, points, punishment and duration, and every rule with its points. Sign in with the same login as the game. Banned players get a button to it when they try to log in, and muted players get a message pointing there.
- Settings > Account has a new Profanity Filter option. It's on by default; turning it off shows chat exactly as other players typed it, on your screen only. It can only be turned off while Social Features are on, and a parent PIN protects it if one is set.
Fixes
- Shops now accept prices and amounts above 32,767. In player-owned shops, a price like 40,000g used to turn into an impossible price nobody could pay.
- Typing an amount works again in the bank, the inventory drop amount, the Pet Pack and the shop search filters.
- Options for something near the edge of the screen, such as Open Furnace in First Steps, no longer open underneath the minimap or other on-screen controls, and a tap only presses what you tapped.
- On phones and tablets, tapping the + button in the bank buys a new tab every time instead of sometimes selecting the tab above.
- Tapping a Gem pack, membership or Manage button in the web game on iPhone and iPad opens checkout again, and signing in there works again.
- Pressing and holding on the game in an iPhone or iPad browser no longer highlights the page or pops up the text magnifier.
- In the web game on some Android phones, such as the Galaxy S23, opening a large window no longer fills the screen with jumbled copies of the window.
- With a bow or staff in hand, the attack button tracks Archery or Magic again, and bows and staffs count as weapons in the toolbelt again.
- First Steps no longer gets stuck at Eat To Heal when your cooked shrimp lands in the backpack.
- Logging out and into another account no longer shows the previous account's hotbar or Collection Log.
- Tools no longer float a pixel above your hand while you stand facing north, and Gemmy now stands still like other NPCs.
- Fixed black screens and crashes on some Android phones, a black screen when switching between WebGL and WebGPU in the browser, and web sign-in buttons that stopped working after logging out.
- Fixed a rare crash that could take a world offline.
